Deep Work 笔记

书大致分为两部分:motivation of deep work & rule of deep work。

  • Where you’ll work and for how long
  • How you’ll work once you start to work
  • How you’ll support your work.

  • Focus on the wildly important
  • Act on the lead measures
  • Keep a compelling scoreboard
  • Create a cadence of accountability

  • Downtime aids insights
  • Downtime helps recharge the energy needed to work deeply
  • The work that evening downtime replaces is usually not that important

Rule #2: Embrace Boredom

“Don’t take breaks from distraction. Instead take breaks from focus.”

  • Be wary of distractions and looping
  • Structure your deep thinking.

Rule #3: Quit Social Media

“Identify the core factors that determine success and happiness in your professional and personal life. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impacts.”

80/20 rule also applies here. If a social media can support the 20 percent of activities that generate the bulk of success (>80%) one needed, people should use it.

Carefully plan your leisure time.

Rule #4: Drain the shallows

Schedule every minute of your day, but with flexibility to account for the sponatenity.

Quantify the depth of every activity. Ask whether this work is useful for your long-term growth, or a college graduate can be trained to do it.

Finish your work by 5:30.

Become hard to reach.
